Hi Ken, I'm puzzled why you put centralized large headings on pages which replicate the standard Mediawiki headings? They take up valuable vertical space and, in many cases, are redundant in that they add no extra information. They take up space on the Recent Changes page and look incongruous when you are editing a page. Not a clean fit. You never see them on Wikipedia. Perhaps I'm missing something in the rationale behind them. Regards, Lochneil 10:04, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

The TNG Wiki article banners were introduced by Brad Gaugler, and I have only been following suite. Maybe raised the issue in the TNG Forum Wiki subforum on the list. I don't understand your comment about the Recent Changes pages. I suspect it has to do with most of us learning how to use a wiki and not noticing that you can enter a subject when making the change.--Ken Roy 11:46, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

I kind of agree with Lochneil - they are a duplication of stuff that just pushes the real information down the screen - "below the fold" in newspaper parlance. I have a big screen so I can see as much as possible without scrolling any page, and find it unhelpful. People with small screens must be even more annoyed --TheKiwi 14:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Ken, my comment about the Recent changes page related to the multiple-line listing which is generated by pages containing the centralized large headings as their starting content. See the log for Feb 18, for instance (you may need to hide minor edits to see back that far). I usually navigate to Recent changes on every visit as this quickly lets me see what's been happenning, and the entries which spilled to multiple lines seemed incongruous and distracting, to me. -- Lochneil 09:04, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Centralized large headings

  • I view the headings as sort of a "Headline" (aka newspaper) that gives a brief description of the article/page
  • The article/page title is used for "categorizing or indexing" the article/page
    • in my wiki's the the article is often not assigned to a particular category or index but rather is intended as a "sub-page" to enhance information within another page.
  • Is the goal of the Wiki to emulate exactly the form and function of Wikipedia? I don't believe it needs to!
  • I guess It comes down to "what aids/enhances communication" ...for my part I think that headlines and images/illustrations do enhance the message and engage the reader. (thats just my two cents --Bgaugler 16:55, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
I have removed the headings on most of the TNG Mods articles, but I think the heading should remain in the TNG Guides and some of the categories.--Ken Roy 16:58, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
I think removal improves the look of the pages, IMHO. I agree with Brad that we don't have to slavishly follow Wikipedia, but I respect that the style adopted by Wkipedia has a proven track record and worldwide acceptance. I also agree that more graphical content could brighten up pages, but I'm at a bit of a loss to suggest such items. The Wiki seems to be coming along nicely, and is going to be a great resource. Good spotting, Brett! And good to know that someone looks at diffs in Recent Changes. Yes, we welcomed our first granddaughter into the world on 20 July 2011. Took a call at 4.15 am from my son saying "Come quickly, and look after the boys while we go to the hospital!" But by the time my wife threw on a dressing gown and arrived at 4.30 am, she opened the front door to hear the baby's first cry! And there she was, just born and delivered by my white-as-a-sheet son!
