TNG Wiki:Privacy policy
Because everyone (not just lawyers) should be able to easily understand how and why their information is collected and used, we use common language instead of more formal terms throughout this Policy.
The TNG Wiki is committed to maintaining your privacy.
Information Collected
We collect no information about readers, other than what standard Web traffic logs reveal.
For contributors, however, we realize that privacy is a special concern, since we require the use of real names and identities. We require that contributors reveal this information, so that our readers, and your co-authors and co-editors, know who you are and that you are people who are willing to take real-world responsibility for what appears here in the TNG Wiki. We believe that this is the only way to have a mature, pleasant TNG user community and credible information.
User Registration
Still, you need not reveal very much information about yourself. You must provide
- the username you want to use
- a valid email address, which you must confirm using the email sent to you by the TNG Wiki
- your real name
- your TNG web site URL
- your agreement to abide by the TNG Wiki:Terms of Service
When you join, the only information we will put on your user page is your real name and your TNG web site URL. After your user page is created, you may edit it yourself, as long as you continue to maintain your real name and some helpful information about your genealogy interests, TNG knowledge, and TNG web site. You do need to provide a valid email address when you register for a username so the TNG wiki can communicate with you. You also need to confirm your email address before your username request is approved.
It is impossible for the vast majority of contributors or readers to find out anything about you other than through what you yourself reveal, through your participation in the system. A category of contributor, called "sysops," who keep our global village here running smoothly, do have access to your e-mail address and account request details. These people are chosen for their responsibility and maturity, and they are intelligent and sensitive to privacy concerns. They know not to share your personal information.
User Contributions
Whatever you post on the TNG Wiki can be seen and used by everyone. When you make a contribution to the TNG Wiki Site, including on user or discussion pages, you are creating a permanent, public record of every piece of content added, removed, or altered by you. The page history will show when your contribution or deletion was made, as well as your username
We do not sell or rent your Personal Information, nor do we give it to others to sell you anything. We use your username to show who posted or modified what on the TNG Wiki so other might know the information is accurate.
If a mod developer restricts their mod downloads to logged in users only, your username and the wiki mod page name will be passed to their sites to allow you to download their mod.
IP Addresses
Finally, when you visit the TNG Wiki Site, we automatically receive the IP address of the device (or your proxy server) you are using to access the Internet, which could be used to infer your geographical location.
IP addresses for anonymous users on the TNG Wiki are not captured because we do not allow anonymous users to contribute to the TNG Wiki
IP Addresses are only captured to prevent fraud and spammers if they happened to request a username.
