Thanks Roy for that. There are certainly many more mods in the category than there are on that page! And I checked, there's only one mod on that page that hasn't got the right category set (ID Analysis). I'm impressed! I expected more.

As a newcomer I've been struggling to get to grips with mods as there really isn't a proper introduction and the link on the front page is to the one I edited, not the one you showed me. But neither of them explain mods, so I've been drafting a page, which I've put in my sandbox. It's not ready to go yet, but it would be better than the existing starter. What do you think?

Incidentally, has this wiki been set up with the right characterset? Assuming it's UTF it looks as if it been set up binary not general, because sorting puts B before a and you can't easily do a search for an article with the wrong capitalization. Ken, can you please delete the file 2littleRoger.gif - I uploaded this but couldn't get it to display in my User talk page. So I reloaded it as LittleRoger.gif, with success. Therefore this first file is redundant. Moral: do not start file names with a numeral. Lochneil 09:11, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ken, I'm puzzled why you put centralized large headings on pages which replicate the standard Mediawiki headings? They take up valuable vertical space and, in many cases, are redundant in that they add no extra information. They take up space on the Recent Changes page and look incongruous when you are editing a page. Not a clean fit. You never see them on Wikipedia. Perhaps I'm missing something in the rationale behind them. Regards, Lochneil 10:04, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Discussion of the above has moved. See new content added to User talk:Lochneil in two places. -- Lochneil 09:10, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Markup of links

Ken, on TNGwiki_Article_Illustrations in the section on "no action" image post you show how to use an http URL to reference an image. While this works, isn't this strongly to be discouraged? IMHO, this should only be used to reference off-site images, which should be a very rare event on TNG Wiki (and applied to copyright images, I guess). For non-copyright images, users should upload the image then reference it as, for example,

as you previously instruct. This tells the wiki engine that the image is in its own repository, and it does not have to fetch it from a URL. This may save time in serving a page, but I'm not certain of this. But it sure makes the markup easier to read!

Also, I notice quite a few links to category and other internal pages which are incorrectly marked up with http URLs (and show the "off-site" icon). This icon is misleading. I have been replacing them with links like these:

 • TNG Modifications
 • All Pages

There are several advantages of using internal markup: if pages are missing, the links display in red; the code is easier to read, the wiki is not dependent on external links which may change, and my guess is that the page may be served faster.

Keep up the good work! Regards, Roger -- Lochneil 03:03, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Roger thanks for discovering how to mark up internal links to Category pages. That information probably needs to be added to the Category:TNG Wiki How To Feel free to correct any external links that should be internal. Most likely they are a result of Brad and I just learning at the time.
As to external images, if they do reside on the TNG Wiki, it is also likely a result of not knowing how to code the syntax to link to them. I find it is easier to insert the image in the page using the the toolbar button. Once you save the page, you can click the link to upload the image.--Ken Roy 12:39, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
Roger, I looked a little closer at the TNGwiki_Article_Illustrations. What Brad is trying to show is how to create an image without allowing the user to click on it. So the correct syntax for making this happen would need to be used to replace the external link, since I believe the other syntax makes it clickable. Not sure what the correct syntax is at the moment. --Ken Roy 12:55, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Graphics

Ken, how do you create those fancy screen capture images with the torn edges, shaded red arrows, and yellow highlights? They look real good. Can you advise which package, please? -- Lochneil 08:24, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

I use Faststone - Image Capture to capture the screen or window, crop the image and then use the Draw option to mark up the image--Ken Roy 03:21, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Ken, I've been very pleased with FastStone Capture - it's such a powerful but lightweight package. I've just done some edits and a tidy up on the Faststone - Image Capture page, and in the process have deleted the link to 200807270716 which was well out of date. Instead, I edited the page to refer the Wiki reader directly to FastStone's detailed information page as being always up-to-date. I suggest that page 200807270716 now be deleted. -- Lochneil 23:52, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

External images or code

Hi Ken
I've added my first mod (Password Generator). As I was curious on how often a mod like this is downloaded I wanted to add a counter. Unfortunately I only succeeded partially.
The part that works is that when someone clicks on the link to the zipfile actually a php script (on my domain) is called. This script counts the click and then gives the zip file (also from my domain) to download. I can then call a stats page on this and possibly other counters.
The part that doesn't work is that I tried to also display this count. For that to work some javascript has to be inserted and the wiki does not seem to allow that.
Is there a way to make this work? Either by offering a counter in the editor bar or by allowing the script tag.
Thanks and keep up the good work. The wiki is great!
Roebie

Hi Roebie,
For a counter to work on the TNG wiki, it would need to be a MediaWiki extension that can be easily installed and configured. Last time I looked, I did not find any such wiki counters. While I am one of the TNG Wiki sysops, I do not have access to the complete system, so adding personal tailored software would not be a good option, since we need to make it easy for Darrin to be able to upgrade the MediaWiki software. --Ken Roy 14:54, 18 November 2010 (UTC)--Ken Roy 14:54, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

tmpl4 Search Married Lastname Box mod

Ken, I just noticed that the text variables for married needs to be changed to $text['married'] and the lastname to $text['lastname'] in both lines as they are missing the quote marks. I corrected the config file and put back in the zip folder I downloaded, however, I could not find how to upload the file. Russ --Russ Strong 20:48, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Add New Article

Ken Is there a way of making a new article non viewable until it is ready to publish? Thanks Brett

Hi Brett, I guess no.
But you can take an empty template and store the code local on your computer in a textfile.
Every time you use only the empty template, copy the code into the empty template and use the preview, but you don't save the content.
So you can write, you have the wiki-preview and no one sees the content.
bye Olaf

As a late response to the above, the sandbox is the conventional way to do it. If the wiki is set up that way everyone has a link to their own sandbox at the top of their page and robots.txt is set up to exclude sandboxes from being searched by Google etc. But you can make your own and it probably won't get links to it.
